Florida Southern Essay

Florida Southern Essay

Topic: Describe a person who has had a significant part of your life. How has that influence helped you prepare for your college experience at Florida Southern?

“Now Allison, if you loosen the bolt here, this is how you change a tire,” my dad tells me while unscrewing the bolt with his wrench. A typical day for me is getting up and throwing on whatever feels comfortable with my hair tied back. I am usually getting paint or grease on myself or sliding under cars to tighten something my dad can’t reach.

Growing up with parents who have given me support and learning experiences through my entire life, has helped me to prepare for the world to come. My dad has a huge impact in my life by showing me how to live on my own, when I am ready to leave. Without his guidance, I would certainly not be ready for college, nor living by myself. He has shown me how to change a tire, change the oil of my car, and how to stay focused while completing a task.

While I was growing up, I went to the garage each day to help my dad finish a task. His tasks consist of changing the light bulb, taking apart a jet ski, or many other things. Each time he showed me that if you give it a little elbow grease, and stay focused, you can accomplish anything. “Each job or chore you do, put your heart and mind into it and finish it right,” my dad always says to me. I always take that into consideration before I move on to another job or task. My dad has taught me how perseverance and compassion will always help me to get through something that might otherwise be a struggle to overcome.

Life is not handed to you on a silver platter nor is it a piece of cake. My dad has taught me that life will not always go the way you want it to. I have been challenged with dyslexia throughout my life. I always had to go the extra mile to study for a hard test or even to write a paper. To me, a disability is no excuse for mediocrity; it is a challenge people have to fight their entire life. You have to be influenced to strive towards goals and be very motivated when times get rough because going that extra mile, will be worth it.

My dad attended and graduated from Florida Southern and has told me about many of his wonderful experiences there.  He said that Florida Southern exposed him to multiple aspects of business operations. At FSC, my dad learned compassion, and to work towards his goal of a degree in Finance. Dad has tried to teach me everything, or most of what he knows, and he has helped me prepare for college. He has shown me all of the ropes on how to study for a big test, which he learned from FSC, and how to achieve academic success. My dad has always told me that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to, and he is right. I would not have gotten this far on my own without my dad’s support and his wise words, even though we sometime fuss, each believing we know the right wrench that will fit the nut on the hubcap. I would not be ready for college without everything he has taught me. I have a better understanding of what is required of me to succeed in this world because of the wisdom my dad has shared with me.
